Archive History

VGMO exists as a long-running archive dedicated to documenting, analyzing, and preserving writing on video game music. What you see today is the result of more than two decades of continuous editorial work, research, and documentation — spanning multiple iterations of the site and reflecting the growth of video game music as an artistic and cultural field.

Preserving Video Game Music Writing Across Decades

VGMO began in the early 2000s under the name Square Enix Music Online, at a time when in-depth writing on video game music was still rare. The site quickly became one of the internet’s foremost resources for soundtrack reviews, interviews, concert reports, and composer-focused features.

From its earliest days, the site aimed not only to review releases, but to treat video game music with the same critical attention afforded to film scores. Many early reviews and interviews from this period remain widely referenced today.

Evolution into VGMO (2014)

In 2014, the site evolved into VGMO (Video Game Music Online). While the name changed, the editorial mission did not.

Under the VGMO banner, the site continued to publish new material, expanding its scope to include a broader range of developers, record labels, composers, and musical styles. Reviews, interviews, biographies, concert reports, and translated liner notes were added steadily over the following decade.

Between 2014 and 2024, VGMO published hundreds of new articles and significantly expanded its archival coverage, establishing itself as one of the most comprehensive English-language resources devoted to video game music.

Publication Hiatus and Preservation (2025)

After more than a decade of continuous publishing activity, VGMO entered a brief offline period in 2025. This pause marked the end of regular publication, but not the end of the project itself.

During this period, work began on reorganizing and preserving the site’s extensive back catalogue. The goal was to ensure that decades of writing — much of it no longer easily replaceable — could continue to exist in a stable, accessible form for future readers.

Relaunch as an Archival Platform

VGMO has now returned as a dedicated archival platform.

The current site brings together material originally published across multiple eras into a unified archive, presented with a revised layout, improved search functionality, and selective copy revisions made for clarity and consistency. Where appropriate, older articles have been lightly edited to reflect updated formatting standards while preserving their original intent and analysis.

Rather than functioning as a news outlet, VGMO now serves as a reference archive — a curated record of how video game music has been documented, discussed, and evaluated over time.

Editorial Continuity and Archival Integrity

Because VGMO spans multiple site iterations and decades of publication, some material may also appear elsewhere online in earlier forms. The versions presented here represent the maintained archival editions, curated and preserved as part of VGMO’s long-term documentation efforts.

All content on this site exists to support research, historical reference, and continued appreciation of video game music as a creative medium.

Looking Forward

As an archive, VGMO’s focus is preservation rather than expansion. The site exists to ensure that writing, interviews, and documentation created over many years remain accessible to fans, researchers, journalists, and historians interested in the development of video game music.

This archive stands as a record of both the music itself and the evolving discourse surrounding it.

VGMO was founded in the early 2000s and preserves material published across multiple site iterations through its archival relaunch.
