Review
The domestic CD release from Nintendo for Yoshi’s Story is a big disappointment. It doesn’t contain all the music from the game, but then the music from the game is downright mediocre in the first place, with the exception of about three tracks. Like Nintendo’s other domestic CDs, this is only a compilation of the “Greatest Hits” from the game.
Body
The music here seems to have a mind of its own. This is very noticeable on “Yoshis on the Beach”, which starts out with great potential — a cutesy “walking along” melody — but then stops for a moment before picking up again. In the space in between are some awful chords. The theme itself is hardly original, it’s basically the same thing over and over again with little variation.
Although the other tracks are a little more varied and enjoyable than this one, they still sometimes tend to stop at the traffic light and wander off into space. The music’s biggest problem is the attempt to make the Yoshis sing. Their whiny, high pitched, unmelodic voices make the Munchkins from “The Wizard of Oz” sound enjoyable. Four tracks are unfortunately filled with those catterwauling voices making noise. Blech!
One neat thing about the CD is that it’s shaped like a Yoshi. As unique as this is, however, it also means that there is not enough space on the disc to include all the music from the game. There are only 15 tracks here, whereas the full release featured 50.
Summary
If there are any who are searching for all the music from the game, check out the Japanese release, however be warned that the score itself is pretty much a total joke… one which I do not find amusing.
