Hip Tanaka pays tribute to the late Satoru Iwata

Fans and game industry personnel of all tiers have been posting emotional tributes online following the news of the death of Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, who passed away this past Saturday, July 11 due to a bile duct growth.

The day after the tragic news came out of Nintendo’s Japanese headquarters, former Nintendo game composer Hirokazu “Hip” Tanaka (Metroid, Super Mario Land, Earthbound/Mother 2) honored the late president with his own tribute in the form of a fittingly upbeat and cheerful Balloon Fight remix on SoundCloud.

Tanaka similarly made two tribute remixes to Iwata’s predecessor Hiroshi Yamauchi when he passed away in 2013.

In addition to being Nintendo’s president since 2002, Iwata was known for a lot of his programming and production work at HAL Laboratory and elsewhere, with games like Balloon Fight, Alcahest, Earthbound/Mother 2 and even the North American version of Dragon Warrior being just a fraction of his accomplishments within the game industry.

Video Game Music Online would like to thank Satoru Iwata for all of his contributions to the videogame industry and the enormous impact he has made on our lives. He will be missed dearly.
