Overview
The Gal☆Gun Original Soundtrack features the additional music that was featured in the Playstation 3 version of the game. Featuring new vocal themes and additional BGM, how does this album compare to the original music for the Xbox 360 release?
Body
Given that the game also features the music from the original release, this soundtrack is quite short in comparison. There are two new vocal themes, “LOVE×ME×68” and “Illumination Love” and each gets represented multiple times on the album. The album opens up with “LOVE×ME×68 (Extra Long Version),” arranged by Keishi Yonao. It’s a fun dance tune with lots of brass and is electronically focused. As for the vocals, they are decent, but nothing to write home about. The regular version of the song is more funk/disco inspired and the electronic dance components are largely lost. In addition to this, there is also an instrumental version.
The other theme, “Illumination Love” is more of a pop rock tune that has a cutesy vibe. It’s an energetic tune, but the vocal performance is definitely weaker. There are also a few other versions on the soundtrack. The movie version is a shorter version of the full song, the instrumental version is sans vocals, and the magical version features more of an electronic focus.
As for the actual BGM, it is largely innocuous. Nothing really stands out, but there is a range of styles. “Hurry! To the Girl’s Side!” is bright and bubbly with an electronic focus and features a decent melody. Both “The Descent of a Junior Angel?” and “I’ve Gotten Entranced….” manage to provide a bubbly soundtrack that gives a bit of warmth and playfulness. Tunes like “The First Goodbye” and “With Everyone From Now On” offer warm and poignant melodies that focus more on orchestral tones with a pop flavor. There is also a lot of filler on the soundtrack with quirky tunes like “Life in the Hopeless Academy” but they don’t really hold up to an independent listen outside of the game.
Summary
In the end, the Gal☆Gun Original Soundtrack is serviceable, but really lacks any standout listens outside of the vocal tunes. It manages to keep the style of the original soundtrack, but fans of III’s work in the Megaman Universe should keep away as this is far from their strongest work.
