Kevin Riepl creates a gritty 80s-inspired fusion score for Bedlam
Kevin Riepl (Gears of War, Unreal Tournament) has been confirmed as the composer of Bedlam, a retro-inspired post-apocalyptic RPG with a unique visual style and gameplay mechanisms. Currently seeking support through Kickstarter, the game is being developed by a trio of Austin-based veterans, including the art director of the Darksiders series.
Early samples from the score, featured here and here, give a strong insight into Riepl’s vision for the music. Like his scores for Gears of War and Hunted: The Demon’s Forge, Riepl has developed a gritty fusion sound by blending electronic, acoustic, and industrial elements. However, as discussed in a recently update, there are also some 80s influences. Here’s what he says about the score:
“When first discussing with John [Mueller] about where he wanted to go with the music, the conversation was heavily rooted in 80s-style soundtracks. The likes and styles of John Carpenter, Jimmy Page, and Brian Eno were talked about quite a bit. The scores these guys created had a nice blend of grit, electronics, and imperfections about them that became the sound of many 80s action and sci-fi films. It was agreed upon that this was a perfect fit for Bedlam. However, after seeing all of the artwork and reading the back story, I knew the music also needed an organic element. This is where I thought the Dobro and slide guitar would play a signature role in conveying the sound for the wasteland that is Bedlam. Pulling from the influences stated above combined with the amazing artwork, story and gameplay from Skyshine, without a doubt there is going to be some very cool, eclectic music created for Bedlam. I can’t wait to get started on more!”
Just nine days into its campaign, Bedlam is close to halfway to its 130,000 USD goal. Those who pledge 25 USD are eligible to receive Riepl’s digital soundtrack, in addition to the digital game itself and a digital artbook.

The game looks like a turn-based Borderlands (which is surprising they didn’t mention that as one of their inspirations). When listening to the music, I close my eyes I see Pandora lol. I am hoping the actual score will differentiate itself from stuff that has already been done.
