Overview
In 2009, Nippon Ichi Software remade the original Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories for the PSP under the new title Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days. Series’ composer Tenpei Sato offered several new tracks for the release, which are compiled together in the Disgaea 2 -Cursed Memories- Portable Original Maxi Single available with the limited edition version of the game. Is it worthwhile?
Body
There are just two tracks on this maxi single, though both are full length ones, one written for vocals, one written for instrumentals.
The single opens with “Let’s Dance at the Final Battle”, a passionate vocal theme that accompanies the new final boss featured on the remake. Tenpei Sato revisits his ’80s rock roots on this track, offering lots of cheesy riffs and flashy guitar solos. However, perhaps the most interesting feature are the vocals provided by Mr. Sato himself. A select taste, certainly, but potentially very enjoyable.
The second track, “Akutare Blues”, revisits the wild western style often featured in Disgaea soundtracks. However, this time it has more of a Japanese anime style touch to it, rather than a Morricone influence. Expect lots of retrospective whistling and deep heartrending chord progressions on the backing guitar. Quite lovely indeed.
Summary
There is little to fault about this single other than its length. Both tracks are enjoyable, accomplished, and novel, especially the final battle theme. Hardcore Disgaea collectors will find it a good bonus with the game, though most others will be safe sticking to the main soundtrack for the original game.
